----------------------------- INTRODUCTION ---------------------------------
Welcome to SIX FEET UNDER, EnQue Software's first foray into Windows
games. This game is a arcade action puzzle game, kind of like Mario
Brothers meets the Lemmings. It features excellent digitized graphics,
sound effects, and musical scores and should run on ANY machine from a lowly
386SX-16MHz with 4-Meg of Ram, 40 Meg Hard disk, and standard 16-color VGA
to a fully loaded Pentium workstation, as long as you are running Windows
3.1, NT, or 95. In addition, it will perform flawlessy at any color depth
and resolution from 640x480 16-color to 1024x768 true color. A single player
controls the game but it's great to have a friend or two looking over your
shoulder to help solve the tough levels! For best results we recommend
running 256-color mode at whatever resolution you prefer based on the size
of your monitor. (We like 1024x768 on our 17" monitors.)
------------------------------- DISCLAIMER ---------------------------------
We hate this legal mumbo-jumbo but we gotta do it!
While we at EnQue strive to provide the highest quality software at very
affordable prices, we cannot account for all user configurations and
actions. Therefore, use of this product constitutes an "assumption of risk".
We make no expressed or implied warrranty of any kind with regard to this
software and documentation. In no event shall the authors or EnQue Software
be liable for incidental or consequential damages in connection with or
arising out of the performance or use of this product.
------------------------- 10 NEW LEVELS AND EDITOR! ------------------------
Six Feet Under now comes with a free level editor, and 10 bonus levels!
For more information, run SFUEDIT.EXE and select the Help menu. A full
"online" manual for designing levels is included!
---------------------------- JOYSTICK SUPPORT ------------------------------
Also included is a joystick driver. This is a unsupported, redistributable
driver from Microsoft. It is located in the file IBMJOY.ZIP. Unzip this
into a directory (i.e. C:\WINDOWS\JOYSTICK) and read the separate file
JOYSTICK.TXT file for instructions on installing the joystick driver. This
is one of the only games we have seen for Windows that supports a joystick
and it's loads of fun - it's even better if you have a "Nintendo" style
joystick pad such as the Gravis PC GamePad - the ultimate way to play -
highly recommended!
---------------------------- TROUBLESHOOTING -------------------------------
NOTE: According to Microsoft, Windows is the ideal game environment because
it handles all the details such as graphics card and audio board support;
you write software to a common specification and Windows handles all the
details. While this is true to some extent, we have found that many of these
drivers are buggy - we have gone to unbelievable lengths to work around these
problems but we cannot account for every configuration. (There are literally
millions!). Therefore, some of you will have trouble, and in all likelihood,
some of you will not be able to run "Six Feet Under". We apologize in
advance for this.
While we are unable to return your calls should you need assistance, we will
be happy to answer questions via E-Mail, BBS, or FAX. Most problems will be
driver related and we may be unable to help you - we cannot test all
possibilities and may refer you to your hardware vendor. However, here are
some guidelines.
-- WINDOWS LOCKS UP
If windows locks up and you see the opening screen, it is most likely due to
a sound card problem. Try the two tests described under "No music" and "No
Sound" below. If these don't work, consult your sound card manual or
supplier. If they do work, you may have to run the game with the command
line paramters -m for no music, or -s for no sound, or -q for
neither. For example, run "C:\SIXFEET\SIXFEET -m". From Program Manager, do
File, Run with the above command or change the command line for the icon if
you added it to a group. To do this, hold down the Alt key and double click
on the icon. Change the command line and click on OK. Refer to you Windows
manual for additional help. Here are some more guidelines.
1) Try closing off all other applications.
2) Exit Windows, power you machine down then back up, and try again.
3) Try running the program with the -m, -s, or -q switch. (see above)
4) Re-install the software.
5) Try changing your video driver as described in your Windows manual and
video card manual (if all else fails, try the VGA driver included with
Windows).
If it STILL doesn't work, you might drop us a note outlining your
configuration and problems in as much detail as possible and we will see
if we can suggest some other things to try.
-- NO MUSIC
Music is played using the Windows standard MIDI interface. If you can play
the MIDI files in the C:\SIXFEET\MIDI directory using Media Player or one
of your sound card programs, then they should work in our game.
-- NO SOUND EFFECTS
Sound is played using the Windows standard WAV interface. If you can play
the WAV files in the C:\SIXFEET\WAVE directory using Media Player or one
of your sound card programs, then they should work in our game.
-- NO GRAPHICS
See above "WINDOWS LOCKS UP" section.
---------------------------- ADDITIONAL HELP -------------------------------
Additional help about the game itself, as well as information on obtaining
additional levels is available once you are running the program. Good
luck and thanks for playing our game - let us know what you think!
